A book you wanted to read for a long time but still haven't - Day 12 of 30 day book challenge

'The host' is a book written by the author 'Stephenie Meyer' - the same famous author who wrote the 'Twilight' series. I've wanted to read this book for a while now because the blurb actually sounds good to me...

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the invading 'soul' who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

The book was released in 2009 and then there was a film released later on in 2013. When the film was released it was making me even more tempted to read the book - I always have to read the book before I see a film. The one thing that's holding me back from actually sitting down and reading the book is the works previously written by Stephanie Meyer...I am of course talking about the 'Twilight' saga.

When the films of 'Twilight' had reached their peak of popularity (If that was possible), I decided to give the books a try to see what all the fuss was about and I thought if I had read the books, the films might seem better. A bit of a peculiar thought process now, I can see, but at the time I thought it was a good idea. Naturally, I was disappointed (surprise, surprise). The idea of 'Twilight' was OK (being generous) but the way it was written was very slow and boring. This is a major reason that I have been putting off reading 'The host'. It's not exactly a short book - it's 620 pages to be precise; if I'm going to read a book of that length, then it needs to be one I'm going to enjoy. If I couldn't even read 'twilight' without losing focus, how can I manage with a book this length by the same author?

I have read some reviews online and asked my friends who have actually read the book what they thought and there seems to be a 50/50 divide. It's a kind of book where you either love it or you hate it. The people who like the book seem to be fans of twilight and that doesn't exactly give me much comfort.

I'm willing to give the book a try and once I do, I can guarantee a book review will follow. Whilst reading the book I shall have to push past my initial judgements based on 'Twilight' and hope it's better than I'm anticipating.

Have you got a book you've always wanted to read but haven't yet for some reason? Is there a book you're deliberately putting off reading? Let me know in the comments!
