Guilty pleasure book - Day 6 of the 30 day book challenge
It's the 10th of June (3 days until my birthday!) and it is day 6 of the 30 day book challenge. Today's challenge is my guilty pleasure book. My first initial thought was 'Twilight', but then I realised it needs to be a book or a series that I actually like... This leads me onto what I think is one of the best pieces of literature but a book that most people probably wouldn't be seen dead reading. The tragic love story I'm thinking of is naturally 'Romeo and Juliet' by William Shakespeare.
Although this book is the most dramatic love story of all time (and probably the most far fetched, based on the number of deaths) but I love it because it's a prime example of just how strong love can be. I'm not a fan of love myself - I believe in the love of your friends and family, but when it comes to 'true love' in relationships, my view is that there is no such thing. However, even though I don't believe in love myself, I enjoy reading stories of love and seeing how a feeling can be so powerful and can effect a person so drastically.
Can we please just bear in mind how far this play has come to the present day times? It is still performed all over the world, there has been a children's film based on it, there have been songs about it and 2 film adaptions. That must say how popular the story must be. The main character of Juliet is only 16 and her love affair - Romeo is a few years older. Just because they happened to fall in love from one look at a party (Which Romeo wasn't even meant to be at), Juliet is ready to put herself to sleep for 24 hours just so that she and her love can ride off into the sunset and be happy forever.
*SPOILERS*
When she awakens and sees that Romeo is dead after he took a poison to kill himself because he thought Juliet was dead - he wanted to join her in death and couldn't live without her, she has no fear in taking a knife and killing herself for exactly the same reason. Over the course of a 4 day plot, there is a total of 6 deaths.
There is...
1. Mercutio
2. Tybalt
3. Paris
4. Romeo
5. Juliet
6. Lady Montague
The plot itself and all these deaths are played out confusingly so if you are new to reading shakespeare but want to read this, you may want to read a brief synopsis online or watch a film adaption before you jump head first into the most well know shakespeare novel.
Are you a fan of shakespeare? Or do you have another novel that is your guilty pleasure? Let me know in the comments!
