Favourite side character - Day 2 of the 30 day book challenge

30 Day book challenger: Day 2 - Favourite side character

So I'm on day 2 of the 30 day book challenge and day 2 is probably the easiest one for me to answer. Who is my favourite side character? (For those who are unsure, a side character is one who isn't the main character/s featured in the book.) My favourite side character is from my favourite book series in the whole world and probably my favourite character in the whole fictional world. She is eccentric, beautiful and peculiar but amazing in her own little way and world. In case you're having difficulty figuring it out, I'll give you a clue. She's in Harry Potter...Still no idea? My favourite side character could realistically be only one person - the wonderful Luna Lovegood.

The reason she happens to just always amaze me so much is because I can see parts of myself in her. I don't want to give you the impression that I say that just because I think she's amazing. She is eccentric - weird is the word other people would use; a word frequently used to describe me. I love how she chooses not to have a large group of friends - it's not a case of that she can't make friends, it's just that she isn't going to be friends with someone who is just going to say hurtful things about her behind her back. I have friends who I love to bits, because I know they like me because of who I am and they wouldn't speak badly behind my back. The main reason I can see myself in her (and why I think she is just so fabulous) is because she doesn't care what people say. She will say anything, do anything, wear anything she wants just because of that reason - she wants to. She doesn't care if people are going to judge her for it or decide they don't like it. Luna has one thought whenever she does or says something - if I'm happy, why should anyone else matter?

I love Luna in the books to the ends of the earth but there's 2 big things that annoy the hell out of me in the films.

1. She doesn't appear until the fifth film - Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix. Throughout the whole book series of Harry Potter she is dotted around; in the fifth book, yes she becomes a more important and deeper character, but she has always been there in
the background.

2. Her character doesn't have her full depth shown in the films. In the films we just see a weird kid who has no 'proper' friends but obviously is happy to help Harry and his friends. In the books, it is clear that she has, admittedly not many, friends. Ginny Weasley is one character who is probably Luna's best friend and everywhere that Luna is, Ginny is too. Every time someone is teasing Luna, Ginny is the first to fight her ground. Just because you don't see her friends, that doesn't mean they don't exist.

This leads me to point out the obvious point of the post - why I love her so much. I'll start with the main reason which I have already said:
 - She doesn't care what anyone thinks of her - She'll do anything she wants and not worry about what anyone else thinks of that.

- Luna helps Harry in any way she can. Book 5 - Harry needs a distraction so he can use the floo network in Umbridge's office - Luna and Ginny have pretty much started that before he can finish the sentence. She has her priorities right - if your friends need help, you damn well help them, no questions asked.

- Her faith/what she believes in is what she stands up for. Though many people question the creatures featured in the 'Quibbler' magazine (which is edited by her dad), she defends their existence, because that's what she believes is true. She doesn't follow the crowd by thinking the way they do - She thinks what she wants to and believes in whatever she wants.

- When everyone is at a loss for what horcrux could be hidden inside hogwarts, Luna comes up with a suggestion that is spot on. How? By thinking outside the box. Just because Rowena Ravenclaw's lost diadem has been lost for centuries, no one considers it to be of any importance or even the tiniest chance of it being a horcrux. Luna (Who is a Ravenclaw) remembers the diadem and is the girl who convinces Harry to speak to Helena Ravenclaw which leads to the destruction of the diadem. By thinking outside the norm and by looking deeper into Hogwarts history, Luna helped to defeat the greatest and most powerful dark wizard as well as save Hogwarts for future students.

I have told you my favourite side character and hope you can see my point of view even if you don't quite agree with me. Leave a comment about who is your favourite side character - from the same series? Another book? Let me know!
