An author you think more people should read - Day 17 of the 30 day book Challenge

Nicholas Sparks is an author everyone has heard of but have not read any of his works. I think that a reason for this is because he is typically labelled as a 'Romance novelist' much to my displeasure. (I'm not a big fan of romance typically). Although this is the stereotype of his work, romance is not the only theme that runs through his work. It is an element of his work, but initially his books tackle issues that have always been present in life and probably always will be.

I can't tell you which book by Nicholas Sparks is my favourite novel purely because it's impossible to choose just one. The best ones which I have read are 'Safe haven', 'The last song' and 'The notebook'. 'Safe haven' tackles the issue of domestic abuse and how hard it is for both the victim and the abuser to move on. 'The last song' shows the truth of cancer and how this can affect ordinary families in countless ways forever. 'The notebook' doesn't really have an ongoing issue as such, but it shows that love can go on for what feels like forever; it doesn't end at old age. What makes this book particularly sad is that the old man in the story can remember everything whereas the old lady has lost all of her memories due to dementia.

There are many numerous film adaptions of most of his books - 'Message in a bottle', 'A walk to remember', 'Nights in Rodanthe'....The list is endless as the more books he writes, the more films are made for his books. The odds are that you have seen a film of his if you haven't read a book by him.

I think more people should consider reading Nicholas Sparks novels more because the themes he chooses to write about are so realistic, but not in a way which makes them boring. When reading 'Safe Haven', the domestic abuse was written about in such a clever way that before I didn't think of quite how violent and how much in danger people can be. When reading 'Dear John', the reality hit me of soldiers being separated from their loved ones and the effect this can have on both parties.
