Book turned into a movie and completely desecrated - Day 4 of the 30 day book challenge
30 day book challenge - Day 4 - Book turned into a movie and completely desecrated.
For those who are unsure, this post is almost asking for a rant. What book was turned into a film and completely ruined? There are several I could say. The Mortal Instruments - City of bones, Percy Jackson (Both films), The perks of being a wallflower, Confessions of a shopaholic. These all irritated me to death. Having said this, the one which annoyed me the most has to be Confessions of a shopaholic. This doesn't mean I prefer this book to any of the others, the reason this one annoys me so much because this is the first book I ever really remember reading and enjoying at the age of 10.
The book is the first in a series written by Sophie Kinsella and the book revolves around the character of Rebecca Bloomwood. She is a journalist for a money magazine called 'Successful Savings' and writes articles about debt collections. The catch is that she is up to her eyeballs in debt, avoids her bank manager so she doesn't have to pay the debts off, then makes matters worse by continuing to be a shopaholic and spend excessive amounts of money.
The book is hilarious and each new book follows her story and life a bit further, starting with her first beginning to write for the magazine then the most recent one involving Rebecca Bloomwood having a little girl who appears to have inherited her mothers obsession with shopping.
The first book was written in the year 2000 and the film was released in the year 2009. The reason that the film was done so badly is because it seems that the producers have chosen the parts they all thought best/funniest from the first 3 books and put them into one film. This didn't really work as it meant we lost little details from the book that made the characters more realistic and relatable.
In the film - Rebecca Bloomwood is an American journalist, whereas in the book - Rebecca Bloomwood is from a small but idyllic village in the UK and lives in London. The character of Derek Smeath (Her bank manager who is following up her debts) was also done in a completely different way to what was originally written in the book. Originally, he is a nice gentleman who simply wants to explain to Rebecca Bloomwood what her current situation is and how what she can do to help her financial situation. This is not how it is presented in the film. In the film he is shown as a threatening villain who wants to publicly humiliate her in every way that he can.
*SPOILERS*
This includes standing up on a live show, that Rebecca is a guest on to talk about debt,
and saying all the excuses that she has used to avoid seeing him; he then reveals how much in debt she is which then ruins her current relationship with her partner and her best friend and also ruining her job as a money journalist. Not a nice guy.
This is a relatively brief rant of the book being turned into a film because the number of mistakes could go on for hours, but these are the main ones. Do you have a book you're very passionate about, or even the first book you read that was turned into a disastrous film? Let me know in the comments!
